It seems there is good news for those interested in cannabinoids—especially for those who dislike the stigma of cannabis or who live in regions where usage of the plant is illegal. CBD can be extracted from other plants. But are they as effective?
The cannabis plant has long been associated with cannabinoids and is widely assumed to be their only source but in truth, the cannabis plant belongs to a whole family of plants called the Cannabaceae family—all of which produce cannibinoids. It includes plants such as liverwort, flaxseed, helichrysum, hops, and yes, cannabis.
But it is on the hops plant that companies such as Medical Marijuana Inc and Peak Health have directed their focus. Extracted from the Humulus kriya plant, a variety of hops native to India, scientists have been able to breed the plant to increase its already naturally occuring CBD levels. They are calling this extract ImmunAG.
According to the nonprofit organization BioactiveCBD.org, ImmunAG has the highest bioactivity of CBD they have ever measured. Which is great news for people looking to the most effect from their cannabidiol products.
But it’s possible that ImmunAG could have even more profound results when combined with other products. In a study performed by Peak Health to test the effects of hops-derived CBD on something called valvular interstitial cell (VIC) calcification, the ImmunAG was more effective than regular CBD “at every concentration.” Valvular interstitial cells are imperative for maintaining heart valve homeostasis. By combining the CBD from the hops plant with B-Caryophyllene and a-Humulene, VIC calcification is greatly reduced.
According to Donish Cushing, lead author of the study, “As phytoceutical approaches to medicine continue to gain traction, an uncovering of the ways that each of these properties interact will constitute an exciting new frontier for science.” We don’t yet know the limits of CBD, especially when combined with other plant extracts or properties but if the effects of such compounds on VIC calcification are any indication, we have reason to be excited indeed.
