Sadie Higuera | Epilepsy
A San Diego family credits cannabinoid products with saving their daughter’s life and wants to help other families gain education and access to cannabinoids by meeting with President Elect Trump.
Doctors gave little Sadie Higuera’s parents a dire diagnosis for their daughter: she was expected to live just three months. That was over three years ago, however, and in the summer of 2016, Sadie attended her first day of preschool. This toddler has beaten the odds, but not by chance. She has overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges because her parents looked for and trusted their search for alternative options. They found a non-psychotropic CBD hemp oil and have become passionate advocates for cannabinoids.
Sadie was born with an extremely rare congenital neurodegenerative disease called Schinzel-Giedion Syndrome. This severe condition is present from birth, affects many parts of the body, and causes severe intellectual disability. At one point, Sadie was having over 300 seizures a day and her body was riddled with tumors.
In just minutes Sadie’s eyes stopped twitching. With a second dose of the CBD oil, her entire body stopped twitching. The family had hope for the first time. The Higueras want other families to experience the same hope with cannabinoids.
Today, Sadie continues to achieve milestones her doctors and parents never expected. In honor of her life and her tenacious spirit, Brian and Damaris, Sadie’s parents, want to help others achieve the joy their family experiences daily.
The Higueras have lived a battle that they want to help other families avoid. Early on, Sadie’s neurologist offered her parents a final option – a medication that would alleviate some of her suffering, but likely kill her within two months. It’s commonly referred to as the “hero drug.” That option did not seem the least bit heroic to Brian. He made a decision that day to seek out and try cannabinoids.
While numerous doctors and clinics turned away Sadie’s father because she was an infant, he finally found San Diego physician Dr. Mark Rabe and came home with hemp-derived CBD oil. In just minutes, Sadie’s eyes stopped twitching.
With a second dose of the CBD oil, her entire body stopped twitching. The family had hope for the first time. The Higueras want other families to experience the same hope with cannabinoids.
The doctor was not allowed to mention or recommend CBD oil as an option for Sadie because physicians can lose their medical license for even suggesting cannabinoids as an option.
Sadie’s health has continued to improve. Just two months after they started giving their daughter CBD oil, Brian and Damaris took her for a routine appointment with her radiologist. All of her tumors were gone, much to the doctor’s surprise. When Brian told her they had been using CBD oil, she said that another of her patients was also using it with positive outcomes.
The doctor was not allowed to mention or recommend CBD oil as an option for Sadie because physicians can lose their medical license for even suggesting cannabinoids as an option. That is because cannabis’s classification as a Schedule 1 drug. And this is exactly what the Higueras are out to change with their heartfelt activism to make access to this plant a reality for more people of all ages.
