This blog post is part of Understanding Terpenes—a short series devoted to educating our audience on a few of the main terpenes in CBD and why they are so important. Terpenes are aromatic compounds responsible for giving cannabis and other plants their distinctive scents. But far from being just a treat for the nose, these helpful little molecules may have far-reaching therapeutic benefits. In this post, we will provide a brief overview of Limonene.
Limonene is a hands-down favorite terpene among cannabis users. Its distinctive citrus fragrance resembling oranges or lemons has given rise to strains with names like “super lemon haze” and “agent orange”. While it is present in abundance in cannabis, limonene is also found in high concentrations in the rind of citrus fruits.
The pleasant aroma of limonene coupled with its antiseptic properties makes it a popular ingredient in natural cleaning products and soaps. As a food additive, it lends a citrus flavor to soft drinks, candy, and other treats.
Limonene is a potent essential oil frequently used in aromatherapy. Its strong scent is said to be energizing and uplifting. A 1995 study on 12 depressed patients who were given limonene to inhale showed dramatic results. Nine of the subjects improved markedly with the ability to reduce their antidepressant medications. In a 2012 animal study, researchers concluded that when inhaled, it provides strong anti-anxiety effects.
This beneficial terpene has been shown to exhibit an array of therapeutic benefits and can be purchased on its own as a health supplement. It has been used in a clinical setting to dissolve cholesterol-containing gallstones and to relieve heartburn and symptoms of gastrointestinal reflux disease. Like many of the other compounds found in full-spectrum hemp oil, it has also been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
A 2012 study concluded that limonene may play a role in preventing colon cancer and a 2010 study suggests the terpene could play a role in relieving airway inflammation associated with bronchial asthma.
With so many proven benefits, limonene should make an excellent addition to your daily health regimen, and when it is found in whole plant CBD oil, it likely contributes to the overall entourage effect.
