CBD-infused coffee is becoming a trendy wellness beverage, combining the attention-boosting properties of caffeine with the calming effects of CBD. But what happens when you mix these two very different substances? Is it even a good idea?
CBD is the non-psychoactive compound found in hemp, kriya and cannabis plants. Its health benefits are wide ranging, but users commonly report calming and anxiety-reducing effects. Caffeine, however, is a stimulant that has mild cognitive-enhancing abilities that can sometimes increase anxiety or cause “jittery” feelings for many sensitive users. It would seem that their effects and purposes are opposed, so why would we put them together?
Do CBD and Caffeine Cancel Each Other Out?
Some CBD experts agree that the combination doesn’t make a lot of sense and believe that caffeine may actually counteract many of the relaxing effects of CBD. The energy-boosting effects of caffeine are caused by its ability to block our adenosine receptors, which cause sleepiness and control blood vessel restriction. Cannabinoid receptors, which interact with CBD, are found in the same region of the brain as these adenosine receptors. When this region is highly activated by caffeine, the brain’s ability to interact with CBD could potentially be reduced. While it doesn’t appear that CBD and caffeine cancel each other out, more research is needed to determine whether caffeine may impair CBD’s effectiveness.
Or Does CBD Alleviate the Negative Effects of Caffeine?
However, it’s highly possible that CBD could allow coffee drinkers to enjoy the benefits of caffeine without the unwanted overstimulation of the nervous system. One possibility is that CBD increases the calming abilities of the adenosine receptors. In this way, CBD-infused coffee could allow for stimulation without anxiety.
Other research suggests that both caffeine and CBD have mood-boosting properties that could compliment each other. Some studies show that CBD also has an energizing effect, which may result in people requiring less caffeine to get them going. Also, both CBD and coffee are full of antioxidants. In fact, coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet. Antioxidants help protect us from cellular damage caused by pollution or the aging process. Combining CBD with coffee might be an excellent way to boost its antioxidant powers.
Ultimately, each body is different and you can decide if combining CBD with coffee makes sense for you and your health needs.
