Awareness about bone health and how to prevent it is essential. According to NOF research, 54 million adults in the United States have osteoporosis and low bone mass. Moreover, osteoporosis results in broken bones in many patients, which may leave them immobile.
The Relationship Between the Endocannabinoid System and Bones
Several researchers have investigated the relationship between the endocannabinoid system and bone metabolism. Our endocannabinoid system is made up of receptors, endocannabinoids, and metabolic enzymes. The two main natural endocannabinoids in our body are called Anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). The cells which are responsible for bone formation and repair utilize these two compounds.
Other main components of the endocannabinoid system are the CB1 and CB2 receptors. According to research, the activation of CB2 receptors promotes bone cell formation in mice. The study also found that CB2 deficiency leads to bone loss.
Effects of CBD on Bones
The effect of CBD on bones is demonstrated by a 2015 study that investigated the properties of cannabidiol in relation to bone-related conditions.
The researchers studied the effects of THC and CBD on bone fracture healing by using both cannabinoids separately and by mixing the two compounds in equal amounts. Besides these experiments, they also researched the effects on the cannabinoids on activity in osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are just a fancy way of saying bone-forming cells.
The research found that mice treated with CBD had improved bone healing. The data analysis and biomechanical testing show that cannabidiol (CBD) enhanced callus strength and toughness of the bone. The researchers also noted that CBD improved collagen crosslink ratio, which likely improves the condition of fractures.
Other research suggests the efficacy of CBD with inflammation and arthritis—two conditions commonly associated with bone disorders. A 2016 study involved the use of transdermal CBD oil patches for pain and inflammation reduction in rats. Researchers concluded that topical CBD could potentially provide pain and inflammation relief without any apparent side-effects.
